7-Methyl-3-(5-tetrazolyl)thioxanthone-10,10-dioxide (0.78g) was suspended in acetic acid (50 ml) and chromium trioxide (0.98g) in water (2.0 ml) added dropwise, followed by concentrated sulphuric acid (0.5 ml) added dropwise. The mixture was heated on the steam bath for 1 hr., then boiled under reflux for 4 hr. Further chromium trioxide (0.98 g) was added and the mixture boiled for a further 16 hr. The green solution was diluted with water, and the precipitated solid filtered off and washed with water. The solid was boiled with acetic acid (200 ml), filtering at the boil.
