A solution containing 2.72 g (10 mmoles) of 5,5-dimethyl-2-(5-nitro-2-furyl)-thiazolidine-4(S)-carboxylic acid in 5.6 ml of water is heated to 100° C. on the steam bath. After adding 5.6 ml of acetic anhydride, the mixture is heated for additional 3 minutes. On the addition of water, 2.6 g (84.3%) of the title compound are precipitated, m.p.: 191°14 194° C., [α]D25 =-315.8° (c=0.938, dimethylsulphoxide).
