Reaction Steps
3.5 g (10 mmol) of (S)-8-chloro-11,12,13,13a-tetrahydro-N-(2-propynyl)-9H-imidazo[1,5-a]pyrrolo[2,1-c][1,4]benzodiazepine-1-carboxamide, 30 mg of mercury (II) acetate and 20 ml of glacial acetic acid are heated to reflux for 5 hours. The solution obtained is then poured into water and extracted three times with methylene chloride. The combined organic phases are dried over magnesium sulphate and evaporated. The residue is chromatographed on silica gel while eluting with methylene chloride and 10% methanol and there is obtained (S)-8-chloro-11,12,13,13a-tetrahydro-1-(5-methyl-2-oxazolyl)-9H-imidazo[1,5-a]pyrrolo[2,1-c][1,4]benzodiazepin-9-one of melting point 228°-230°.
