The nitrile from part (b) (20 g) was added in one portion to 75% sulfuric acid (from concentrated H2SO4 [270 g]) and ice (90 g) with stirring at 140°-150° C. 15-20 minutes later, ice (1000 g) was added. After decantation, the sticky solid was dissolved in methanol (200 ml) and hot water (5 ml) added. On cooling, the precipitate was collected, washed with 90% methanol (2×50 ml) and dried to give the product (85-90%), m.p. 194°-195° C.
