96.4 grams (0.9 mole) of benzylamine was added dropwise with stirring while the temperature was maintained below 45° C. to a solution of 116.1 grams (1 mole) of methyl acetoacetate and the reaction mixture allowed to stand overnight to obtain a white solid. The latter was dried and then stripped of the solvent to obtain a residue which was crystallized from hexane to obtain 115.9 grams of the methyl 3-benzylaminocrotonate, m.p. 36°-37.5° C. 4.1 grams (20 millimoles) of the product was dissolved in 5 milliliters of benzene and used in the preparation of the dihydropyridine compound.
