3-Aminopicolinic acid (A-1) (30 g, 217 mmol, 1.0 eq) is suspended in formamide (75 mL, 1.88 mol, 8.66 eq). The resulting mixture is stirred at 140° C. for 1 h and at 170° C. for 1 h and then at 180° C. for an additional 1 h. The mixture is cooled to RT and filtered. The filter cake is washed with water, and dried in vacuo to afford the product, pyrido[3,2-d]pyrimidin-4-ol (A-2).
