Procedure
To a solution of 9-decylcarbazole 15 (3.0 g, 10 mmol) in dichloromethane (90 mL) was added N-bromosuccinimide (1.80 g, 10.1 mmol) at 0° C. in portions. The mixture was warmed to room temperature and stirred overnight. After removal of the solvent, the residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography using petroleum ether/dichloromethane as eluent affording the desired product (3.35 g, 87%). 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3, δ) 8.19 (d, J=1.6 Hz, 1H), 8.04 (d, J=8.0 Hz, 1H), 7.53-7.45 (m, 2H), 7.39 (d, J=8.0 Hz, 1H), 7.24-7.20 (m, 2H), 4.26 (t, J=7.2 Hz, 2H), 1.86-1.79 (m, 2H), 1.30-1.22 (m, 2H), 0.88 (t, J=6.4 Hz, 3H). 13C NMR (100 MHz, CDCl3, δ) 140.7, 139.0, 128.2, 126.3, 124.5, 123.0, 121.8, 120.5, 119.1, 111.5, 110.1, 108.9, 43.2, 31.8, 29.5, 29.4, 29.3, 29.2, 28.9, 27.2, 22.6, 14.1. MS (MALDI-TOF): m/z 387.0912 (M+).
