Addition of acetonitrile to 3-(5-benzyloxypentoxy)-benzaldehyde gave 3-[3-(5-benzyloxypentoxy)-phenyl]-3-hydroxypropionitrile as yellow oil. Yield (0.74 g, 51%): 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ 7.23-7.41 (m, 6H), 6.90-6.98 (m, 2H), 6.86 (d, J=8.0 Hz, 1H), 5.0 (t, J=6.0 Hz, 1H), 4.51 (s, 2H), 3.98 (t, J=7.0 Hz, 2H), 3.51 (t, J=6.4 Hz, 2H), 2.75 (d, J=6.0 Hz, 2H), 1.75-1.84 (m, 2H), 1.67-1.73 (m, 2H), 1.53-1.62 (m, 2H).
