A solution of (E)-1-(2-hydroxy-3-nitrophenyl)-3-(2-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)prop-2-en-1-one 9 (1.4 g, 4.2 mmol) and SeO2 (1.4 g, 12.5 mmol) in DMSO/dioxane (35 ml, 1:15) was heated at reflux for 12 h. After cooling to room temperature, the reaction mixture was passed through a filter and the filtrate was concentrated to dryness. The crude residue was suspended in H2O and collected by filtration to give 10 as a yellow solid (1.3 g, 92% yield).
