Reaction Steps

A mixture of (E)-1-(2-hydroxy-3-nitrophenyl)-3-o-tolylprop-2-en-1-one 21 (250 mg, 0.88 mmol), I2 (471 mg, 1.86 mmol), DMSO (0.5 ml) and 1,4-dioxane (10 ml) was heated at reflux for 5 h. The reaction mixture was concentrated and H2O was added. The resulting precipitate was collected by filtration, rinsed with pentane/EtOAc (1:1) and dried under vacuum to give 22 as a yellow solid.
