Procedure

3-Hydroxybenzophenone (25 g, 126.1 mmol) in formamide (130 mL, 3.3 mmol) was heated to 180° C. for 18 hours. The reaction was allowed to cool slightly then poured into ice-cooled water and stirred for 30 minutes, filtered and washed with water. The solid was stirred in water (60 mL) and ethanol (60 mL) and heated to 50° C. for 1 hour, then allowed to cool. The solid was filtered and washed with water to give the title compound as a brown solid (33.94 g, 118%).
