2-Methyl-4-(5,6,7,8-tetrahydronaphthalen-2-yl)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline was prepared from 6-acetyltetralin and benzylamine as described in Example 58 (Steps A to D). It was dissolved in ethyl acetate and treated with 2 M hydrogen chloride in diethyl ether (2 equiv) to give the corresponding hydrochloride salt (0.43 g, 98.6% AUC HPLC): 1H NMR (300 MHz, MeOD) δ 7.22-7.34 (m, 3H), 7.08 (d, J=7.8 Hz, 1H), 6.94 (br s, 3H), 4.49-4.62 (m, 3H), 3.81 (dd, J=12.0, 6.0 Hz, 1H), 3.53 (t, J=11.7 Hz, 1H), 3.08 (s, 3H), 2.76 (br s, 4H), 1.82 (br s, 4H), EI MS m/z=278 [C20H23N+H]+. Anal. Calcd. for C20H24ClN: C, 75.60; H, 7.59; N, 4.41 with 1.1 equiv HCl. Found: C, 75.44; H, 8.11; N, 4.26.
