Procedure
To a suspension of N-(2-acetylphenyl)-4-methoxybenzamide (0.865 g, 3.2 mmol) in t-butanol (12 mL), was added potassium t-butoxide (1.57 g, 12.8 mmol). The reaction mixture was heated at 70° C. for 24 h under N2, The mixture was cooled to rt and poured into 30 mL of saturated NH4Cl. The solids were collected and purified by column chromatography using 10% MeOH in DCM to give 398 mg of 1-(2-amino-phenyl)-3-(4-methoxy-phenyl)-propane-1,3-dione (49%).
