Reaction Steps

5-Methyl-6-nitro-2-trifluoromethyl-quinoline-7-carboxylic acid methyl ester (3.78 g) is dissolved in 200 mL of methanol/water (3:1 mixture) and treated with lithium hydroxide hydrate (1.06 g) at room temperature. After reaction completion, the mixture is poured into ethyl acetate and 2N hydrochloric acid, the organic phase is washed 3× with water, dried over sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated in vacuum. The residue is triturated with a small amount of hexane. Filtration gives 3.50 g of the title compound of the formula
