Procedure

To [3-(2-formyl-4-nitro-phenoxy)-4-methoxy-phenyl]-acetic acid ethyl ester (1 equivalent) in methanol was added sodium borohydride (1.2 equivalents), and the reaction was stirred at room temperature for 15 minutes. The mixture was then concentrated and partitioned between EtOAc and H2O. The aqueous layer was separated and extracted with EtOAc, and the combined organic layers were dried over MgSO4, filtered, and concentrated to give the title compound.
