Reaction Steps
To a solution of 3-hydroxy-1-{4-[3-(p-nitrobenzyloxycarbonylamino)-azetidine-1-carbonyl]-1,3-thiazol-2-yl}azetidine (630 mg, 1.45 mmol) (obtained as described in Reference Example 57(5)) in a mixture of methylene chloride (32 ml) and pyridine (12 ml) were added methanesulfonyl chloride (377 μl, 4.36 mmol) and triethylamine (611 μl, 4.36 mmol) in an ice bath. After stirring the mixture in the ice bath for 10 minutes, the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 4 hours. After checking the completion of the reaction, the reaction mixture was partitioned between ethyl acetate and saturated aqueous sodium chloride solution. The organic layer was washed with saturated aqueous sodium chloride solution, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure. To the residue were added ethyl acetate and diisopropyl ether, and the mixture was filtered off and washed with diisopropyl ether to afford 3-methanesulfonyloxy-1-{4-[3-(p-nitrobenzyloxycarbonylamino)-azetidine-1-carbonyl]-1,3-thiazol-2-yl}azetidine (766 mg, yield 100%) as a white solid.
