3-(3,5-Dimethyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)-1-propene (5.0 g) is added to a mixture of powdered potassium hydroxide (7.98 g) in dimethylsulfoxide (50 ml) at 15°. Iodomethane (8.8 ) is then added and stirred below 20° for 0.5 hr. The reaction mixture is poured into ice/water and the product is extracted with ether (2×). The ether extracts are washed with water (3×), saline, dried over sodium sulfate and concentrated under reduced pressure to give 3-(3,5-dimethyl-4-methoxyphenyl-1-propene. The "propene" is transformed to the corresponding "propanol" with borane-dimethylsulfide by the general procedure of PREPARATION NA-19 to give the title compound.
