A pressure vessel was charged with 4.71 g of phenol, 17.56 g of potassium ortho-cresolate being in a dry powder form and 43 ml of NeoSK 1400 (a dibenzyltoluen mixture medium produced by Soken Chemical K.K.). With stirring, reaction was carried out at a carbon dioxide pressure of 3 kg/cm2 (G) and at 270° C. for one hour. An analysis of the reaction mixture after conversion to acid form showed a para-hydroxybenzoic acid yield of 81.1% on the basis of phenol.
