Procedure
A pressure vessel was charged with 4.73 g of phenol, 23.52 g of potassium para cresolate being in a dry powder form and 54 ml of a high boiling point light oil fraction (160° to 230° C./10mmHg) . Reaction was carried out at a carbon dioxide pressure of 4 kg/cm2 (G) and at 250° C. for one hour. An analysis of the reaction mixture after conversion to acid form showed a para-hydroxybenzoic acid yield of 79.6% on the basis of phenol.
