A pressure vessel was charged with 4.70 g of phenol, 17.42 g of potassium 2,4,6-trimethylphenolate being in a dry powder form and 38 ml of NeoSK 1400. With stirring, reaction was carried out at a carbon dioxide pressure of 5 kg/cm2 (G) and at 260° C. for 10 min. An analysis of the reaction mixture after conversion to acid form showed a para-hydroxybenzoic acid yield of 73.1% on the basis of phenol.
