0.082 g of sodium hydroxide was dissolved in 1 ml of water, followed by addition of 3 ml of methanol and 0.22 g of ethyl p-(3-trifluoromethylheptyloxy)-benzoate and 3 hours of stirring at 50° C. After the reaction, water was added, methanol was removed by distillation under a reduced pressure, and 6N-hydrochloric acid was added to precipitate a crystal. The crystal was recovered by filtration, washed with water and dried to obtain 0.15 g (yield: 76%) of p-(3-trifluoromethylheptyloxy)benzoic acid, which showed: [α]D24 +4.2, [α]43525 +8.6 (c 1.00, CHCl3).
