Procedure
To a solution of 1.80 g of 7-(3-amino-1-pyrrolidinyl)-6-fluoro-1-methyl-4-oxo-1H,4H-[1,3]thiazeto[3,2-a]quinoline-3-carboxylic acid in 10 ml of chlorosulfonic acid, a trace of iodine was added, and the mixture was bubbled with chlorine gas for 3.5 hours under ice-cooling with stirring. The reaction mixture was poured into ice-water and neutralized to pH 8 with 10% aqueous sodium hydroxide. The precipitate obtained was collected by filtration and converted to the methanesulfonate. The salt was dissolved into water and filtered. The filtrate was neutralized to pH 8 with 10% aqueous sodium hydroxide. The precipitate was collected by filtration to give 1.50 g of pale yellowish-brown crystals.
