Procedure
Methyl 5-ethylthiopyrrole-3-carboxylic acid (100 mg.) was combined with 5 ml. of ethanol and 5 ml. of 1 N sodium hydroxide and heated on a steam bath in an open flask for 1 hour. The aqueous residue was cooled to room temperature and extracted with 2 ml. of ether. The aqueous phase was acidified with conc. hydrochloric acid to yield crystalline 5-ethylthiopyrrole-3-carboxylic acid (38 mg., m.p. 110°-112° C., m/e 171).
