Procedure
Methyl 5-(2-methylbenzoyl)pyrrole-3-carboxylic acid (3.6 g.) was combined with 40 ml. of methanol and 40 ml. of 1 N sodium hydroxide, reluxed for 2.5 hours, the methanol evaporated, the aqueous residue diluted with approximately one volume of water and extracted with ether. The aqueous phase was cooled and acidified with conc. hydrochloric acid to yield crude product (4.0 g.), recovered by filtration. Recrystallization from methanol afforded purified 5-(2-methylbenzoyl)-pyrrole-3-carboxylic acid (2.2 g., m.p. 280°-282° C.).
