Procedure
Ethyl 4-methyl-5-benzoylpyrrole-3-carboxylate (0.8 g.) was combined with 20 ml. of methanol and 15 ml. of 1 N sodium hydroxide and boiled in an open flask for 1.5 hours on a steam bath. The aqueous residue was cooled, extracted with 10 ml. of ether, and acidified with conc. hydrochloric acid to yield crystalline 4-methyl-5-benzoylpyrrole-3-carboxylic acid (630 mg., m.p. 241°-243° C., m/e 229).
