Procedure
2-Hydroxyethyl 4-(4-chlorophenoxy)pyrrole-2-carboxylate (400 mg.) was dissolved in 10 ml. of acetone and 10 ml. of 1 N sodium hydroxide and left to stand at room temperature for approximately 16 hours. Acetone was evaporated in vacuo, the aqueous residue was acidified with conc. hydrochloric acid and crystalline product (320 mg.) recovered by filtration. Recrystallization from ether/hexane of 400 mg. of product prepared in this manner affored purified 4-(4-chlorophenoxy)pyrrole-2-carboxylic acid (234 mg., m.p. 188°-190° C., m/e 237).
