Reaction Steps

A mixture of 1564 g. (10.2 mole) of methyl 3-hydroxybenzoate, 1407.6 g. (10.2 mole) potassium carbonate and 1285.2 g. (10.2 mole) benzyl chloride in 5 . of acetone is heated at reflux for 22 hours. The reaction mixture is then cooled, filtered and the filtrate evaporated. The residue is crystallized in a small volume of pentane to give a quantitative yield of the title compound.
