Phenanthrene-2-carboxylic acid (1, 0.116 g, 0.5 mmol) was dissolved in acetic acid at 70° C. and then bromine (0.027 ml, 0.5 mmol) was added. The mixture was stirred at 70° C. overnight. The following day, bromine (0.027 ml, 0.5 mmol) was added and the mixture was refluxed for 6 h and then allowed to cool. The resulting precipitate was collected by filtration. 1H NMR (270 MHz, DMSO):—7.8 (m, 2H), 8.1 (d, 1H), 8.25 (d, 1H), 8.45 (s, 1H), 8.9 (s, 1H), 8.95 (m, 1H) and 9.05 (d, 1H).
