N-Allyl amine 10 (1.033 g; 3.2 mmol) was dissolved in 50 ml of ethanol. Palladium on charcoal (10% dry; 0.103 g) was then added. The mixture was shaken on a Parr hydrogenator under 60 psi H2 for 3 hours. After TLC showed no more starting material, the mixture was filtered through Celite and concentrated to give 0.95 g (91%) of an oil that was used without further purification: 1H NMR: (300 MHz, CDCl3): 7.15 (t, 1H, J=7.2 Hz); 7.04 (d, 1H, J=8.1 Hz); 6.84 (t, 2H, J=7.5 Hz); 6.65 (d, 1H, J=8.4 Hz); 4.07 (m, 2H); 3.95 (s, 3H); 3.86 (s, 3H); 3.71 (q, 1H, J=5.1 Hz); 3.42 (d, 2H, J=15.6 Hz); 2.62 (m, 2H); 2.471 (t, J=10.5 Hz); 1.69 (h, 2H, J=7.2 Hz); 0.98 (t, 3H, J=7.5 Hz). CIMS m/z: 326 (M+H+, 100%).
