Sodium Bicarbonate → Carbon Dioxide
Participants
| Role | Name | HCID | Charge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reactant | Sodium Bicarbonate | HCID 516892 | — |
| Solvent | Water | HCID 962 | — |
| Product | Carbon Dioxide | HCID 280 | — |
| Product | Sodium Carbonate | HCID 10340 | — |
Reaction Steps
The formation of sodium carbonate occurs by two different mechanisms. In the first mechanism, sodium bicarbonate reactions with sodium hydroxide to form sodium carbonate and water, Eq. (9). In the second mechanism, sodium bicarbonate combines with itself to form sodium carbonate, carbon dioxide and water, Eq. (10). NaHCO3+NaOH→Na2CO3+H2O ΔGor=−45.6 kJ (9) 2 NaHCO3→Na2CO3+H2O+CO2 ΔGor=+28.9 kJ (10)
