Reaction Steps
A 0° mixture of 3-benzoyl-9-(phenylsulfonyl)-1,2,3,4,5,6-hexahydroazepino[4,5-b]indole (Step II, 1.61 g, 3.74 mmol) in dry DMF (18 mL) is treated with sodium hydride (60% in oil, 165 mg, 4.11 mmol). After 30 min, the mixture is treated with iodomethane (256 μL, 4.11 mmol) and allowed to slowly warm to 20-25° under nitrogen over 16 hr. The resultant mixture is diluted with H2O and filtered. The residual solid is triturated with refluxing methanol, isolated, and dried in the vacuum oven at 50° to give the desired indole, imp=254-255°.
