Reaction Steps

Diallyl-2-(3-trifluoromethylbenzyl)malonate (1.03 g, 3.01 mmol) in anhyd THF (20 mL) was added dropwise to a stirred suspension of sodium hydride (95%, 84 mg, 3.31 mmol) in anhyd THF (20 mL) at room temperature. The clear solution was stirred at room temperature for 30 min and then a solution of 2,4′-dibromoacetophenone (1.0 g, 3.61 mmol) in THF (10 mL) was added dropwise. The reaction mixture was warmed to 50° C. for 3 h (TLC control), cooled to room temperature and then water (10 mL) was added cautiously. The reaction mixture was acidified to pH 3 with 2 N hydrochloric acid and then extracted with ethyl acetate (3×30 mL). The combined extract was washed with water, sat'd aq NaCl, dried over anhyd MgSO4, filtered and concentrated in vacuo. Purification by flash column chromatography (10% ethyl acetate in heptane) afforded the title compound as a colorless oil (1.23 g)
