Procedure

A stirred suspension of polyvinylpyridine (2.63 g, 25 mmol) in a solution of 5-tert-butyl-2,3-dihydro-[1,3,4]thiadiazole-2-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (36) (J. Med. Chem., 34, p. 439 (1991)), (2.16 g, 10 mmol) in dry toluene was treated with-the dropwise addition of (1-chlorocarbonyl-2-methyl-propyl)-carbamic acid 9H-fluoren-9-ylmethyl ester (4.76 g, 12.1 mmol) in 20 mL of anhydrous toluene. After stirring for 16 hours, the suspension was filtered and the filtrate was washed with saturated sodium bicarbonate solution. The organic layer was separated, washed with water, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, and evaporated to give a yellow oil. Purification by flash chromatography eluting with 9/1 hexane/ethyl acetate gave 2.66 g (49% yield) of the title compound (37) as a clear, viscous oil. 1H NMR (500 MHz, CD3OD) δ 0.89 (d, 1.5H), 0.93 (d, 1.5H), 1.00 (d, 1.5H), 1.06 (d, 1.5H), 1.22 (t, 3H), 1.28 (s, 9H), 2.12-2.22 (m, 0.5H), 2.32-2.42 (m, 0.5H), 4.18-4.28 (m, 2H), 4.31-4.45 (m, 2H), 4.96-5.01 (m, 0.5H), 5.02-5.10 (m, 0.5H), 5.52 (d, 0.5H), 5.61 (d, 0.5H), 6.10 (s, 0.5H), 6.13 (s, 0.5H), 7.27-7.34 (m, 2H), 7.35-7.42 (m, 2H), 7.56-7.64 (m, 2H), 7.73-7.78 (m, 2H).
