Methanol → Methyl 3-Hydroxyphenylacetate
Reaction equation
[OH:1][C:2]1[CH:3]=[C:4]([CH2:8][C:9]([OH:11])=[O:10])[CH:5]=[CH:6][CH:7]=1.OS(O)(=O)=O.[CH3:17]O>>[CH3:17][O:10][C:9](=[O:11])[CH2:8][C:4]1[CH:5]=[CH:6][CH:7]=[C:2]([OH:1])[CH:3]=1Participants

Procedure
To a stirring solution of (3-hydroxy-phenyl)-acetic acid (4.3 g, 0.028 mole) in methanol (30 mL) was added H2SO4 (1 mL) and the mixture was heated to reflux for 2 hours. The solvent was removed, the residue was washed with H2O, and extracted three times with EtOAc (ethyl acetate). The combined organic layers were dried over Na2SO4, filtered, and concentrated to give 4.7 g (99% yield) of the title compound as an oil. MS (ESI) 167.0(M+H+).
