To 3.23 g of 2-hydroxy-3-phenyl-3-(2-methoxy-phenoxy)-1-nitro-propene sodium salt dissolved in 50 ml of anhydrous THF there was added at 0° C. 16.7 g of ethyl bromoacetate. After 2 hours at 0° C. the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 48 hours. The mixture was poured into water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic extracts were washed with water, dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated to dryness. The residue was separated by column chromatography on silica gel (mobile phase: ethyl acetate/cyclohexane 1/1), to obtain 2.70 g of 2-ethoxycarbonylmethyloxy-3-phenyl-3-(2-methoxy-phenoxy)-1-nitropropene (oil).
