15.0 G. of 2,4-dimethyl-5-(methylthio)thiophene-3-carboxaldehyde was dissolved in 150 ml. fo dry ethanol with stirring at 20° C. 0.8 G. of sodium borohydride was added and the mixture was stirred for 30 minutes, then poured into ice water and extracted with ethyl ether. The combined ether extracts were washed with a solution of 5% sodium carbonate and saturated sodium chloride solution, dried over sodium sulfate, filtered, and evaporated to yield 2,4-dimethyl-3-hydroxymethyl-5-(methylthio)thiophene.
