To a mixture of 6.92 g (0.045 mol) of 4-methyl-3,3-difluoro-1,4-pentanediol and 28 mL of pyridine at 0° C. was added 16 mL of acetic anhydride and the mixture was stirred at 0° C. for 1 hr and at 25° C. for 1 hr. The mixture was added to 15 mL of methanol and the solution was evaporated to dryness to yield oily 4-methyl-3,3-difluoro-1,4-pentanediol 1-acetate. NMR (CDCl3) δ4.40 (triplet, 2, J=7 Hz), 2.30 (multiplet, 2), 2.06 (singlet, 3) and 1.33 ppm (triplet, 6, J=1 Hz).
