The ester from stage (a) (3.28 g) was saponified at pH 11.3 (pH stat) for 4 hr with 1 N. NaOH (10 ml). The reaction mixture was extracted with ether (30 ml), the aqueous phase acidified to pH 2.0 with cHCl and extracted with ethyl acetate (3×30 ml). The combined extracts were dried (MgSO4) and evaporated in vacuo to a viscous oil (2.7 g). The structure was confirmed by NMR.
