4,5-Dimethyl-furan-2-carbaldehyde (0.98 ml, 8 mmol) was treated in the same manner as described above for the synthesis of 3-pentylamino-phthalic acid dimethyl ester. The residue (oil) was purified by chromatography (SiO2, 10% ethyl acetate/hexanes) to give 0.95 g (75%) of product as a yellow oil: 1H NMR (CDCl3) δ 7.32 (t, J=8.2 Hz, 1H), 6.97 (bs, 1H), 6.88-6.83 (m, 2H), 5.99 (s, 1H), 4.28 (d, J=5.5 Hz, 2H), 3.86 (s, 3H), 3.83 (s, 3H), 2.17 (s, 3H), 1.87 (s, 3H).
