Procedure
To a stirred solution of 27 mg 3-cyclopentyl-2-(3-methoxyphenyl)-2-cyclopenten-1-one oxime (Example 7) in 5 ml dichloromethane at −78° C., was added 0.5 ml 1.0 M boron tribromide in hexane dropwise under inert atmosphere. The reaction mixture was stirred for 2 hours while being allowed to gradually warm to room temperature. Then the reaction mixture was poured into saturated aqueous sodium carbonate, and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was washed with brine, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, and filtered. The filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure and purified by column chromatography (silica gel, hexane/ethyl acetate=1:1) to yield 12 mg of 3-cyclopentyl-2-(3-hydroxyphenyl)-2-cyclopenten-1-one oxime as a solid. mp=207-209° C.; 1H NMR (CDCl3, 300 MHz): δ 7.26-7.21 (m, 2H), 6.79-6.70 (m, 3H), 2.93 (m, 1H), 2.80 (m, 2H), 2.61 (m, 2H), 1.70 (m, 4H), 1.54 (m, 4H); APCI MS: m/z 258.1 (M+1).
