A mixture of 1-benzyl-4-methyl-1H-imidazole-2-carbaldehyde (450 mg, 2.25 mmol), (E)-4-(benzylideneamino)isobenzofuran-1(3H)-one (640 mg, 2.7 mmol), sodium methanolate (207 mg, 9 mmol) and ethyl propionate (25 mL) were stirred at room temperature overnight. Then the resulting mixture was evaporated under reduced pressure and extracted with ethyl acetate (4×100 mL) and concentrated to give methyl 3-(1-benzyl-4-methyl-1H-imidazol-2-yl)-4-oxo-2-phenyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline-5-carboxylate (250 mg, yield 25%). LC-MS (ESI) m/z: 438 (M+1)+.
