To a solution of 3-(4-chloro-pyridin-2-yl)-thiophene-2-carbaldehyde (30 mg, 0.13 mmol) in EtOH (1 mL) was added NaBH4 (50 mg, 1.3 mmol) at 0° C. The resulting mixture was stirred at room temperature overnight, then was poured into water and extracted with CH2Cl2. The organic layer was dried and concentrated to yield [3-(4-chloro-pyridin-2-yl)-thiophen-2-yl]-methanol as an oil.
