Procedure
To 6-amino-1-[(5-methylpyrazin-2-yl)methyl)-2-thioxo-2,3-dihydropyrimidin-4(1H)-one (0.50 g, 2.00 mmol, obtained from Example 14(b)) in 90% acetic acid (7 mL) was added, dropwise, a solution of sodium nitrite (0.14 g, 2.1 mmol) in water (1 mL). After 2 h, sodium dithionite (1.0 g, 5.0 mmol) was added and after another 2 h the mixture was concentrated in vacuo providing the title compound (0.30 g, 57% yield) as a yellow solid. This was used without further purification.
