A suspension of 3-Benzyloxy-6-methyl-4-oxo-1,4-dihydro-pyridine-2-carboxylic acid (3.2 g, 0.02 mol) in DMF (30 ml) was heated in an oil bath at 120° C. for 8 hrs. The mixture was cooled to room temperature and the insoluble solid was filtered. The solid was washed with hexane and dried under vacuum for 16 hrs to give 5-benzyloxy-2-methyl-1H-pyridin-4-one (3.32 g, 77% yield).
