Reaction Steps
A solution of 7-bromo-1-oxo-4,4,6-trimethyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene (1.02 g, 3.82 mmol), methoxylamine hydrochloride (0.638 mg, 7.63 mmol) and pyridine (0.93 mL, 11.46 mmol) in ethanol (30 mL) was refluxed for 3 hours. The mixture was concentrated in vacuo then diluted with water and extracted twice with ethyl acetate. The combined organic layer was dried (Mg2SO4), filtered and evaporated to give 1.13 g of 7-bromo-1-oxo-4,4,6-trimethyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene-O-methyloxime as a yellow oil (quantitative) and used without further purification in the Suzuki coupling (step a). 1H NMR (300 MHz; CDCl3): 1.25 (s, 6 H), 1.75 (t, J=6.9 Hz, 2 H), 2.38 (s, 3 H), 2.73 (t, J=6.9 Hz, 2 H), 3.98 (s, 3 H), 7.17 (s, 1 H), 8.11 (s, 1 H).
