Reaction Steps

A mixture of the 6-methoxy-2-(4-nitropheyl)benzothiazoles 5 (22 mg, 0.077 mmol) and tin(II) chloride dihydrate (132 mg, 0.45 mmol) in boiling ethanol was stirred under nitrogen for 4 hrs. Ethanol was evaporated and the residue was dissolved in ethyl acetate (10 mL), washed with 1 N sodium hydroxide (2 mL) and water (5 mL), and dried over MgSO4. Evaporation of the solvent gave 19 mg (97%) of the product 6 as yellow solid.
