Procedure

3.50 g (12.7 mmol) of 2-[3-(5-methyl-1,2,4-oxadiazol-3-yl)phenoxy]pentanoic acid are dissolved in 10 ml of thionyl chloride, and the mixture is heated at the boil for 2 hours. The reaction mixture is evaporated, the residue is taken up in toluene, and the solution is reevaporated, giving 2-[3-(5-methyl-1,2,4-oxadiazol-3-yl)phenoxy]-pentanoyl chloride as a yellowish solid.
