30 ml of 1N sodium hydroxide solution are added to a solution of 10.1 g (31.0 mmol) of methyl [3-(5-methyl-1,2,4-oxadiazol-3-yl)phenoxy]-2-phenylacetate in 30 ml of methanol, and the mixture is heated at 80° C. for 3 hours. The reaction mixture is evaporated, 1N HCl is added, and the mixture is extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic phase is dried and evaporated, and the residue is recrystallised from ether, giving [3-(5-methyl-1,2,4-oxadiazol-3-yl)phenoxy]-2-phenylacetic acid as colourless crystals; ESI 311.
