Procedure
A mixture of 20 g. of 4-phenoxymethylphenol and 13.2 g. of the ethyl ester of 2-hydroxyisobutyric acid is combined with 15 g. of sulfuric acid, and the reaction mixture is agitated for 2 hours at 50°-60°. After cooling, the mixture is combined with water and worked up as usual, obtaining the ethyl ester of 2-(4-phenoxymethylphenoxy)-2methyl-propionic acid.
