A solution of agmatine hemisulfate (2.00 g, 11.2 mmol) dissolved in 20 mL of ethanol was treated with 2-isocyanatoethyl methacrylate (1.50 mL, 10.6 mmol) over the course of a few minutes. The solution was allowed to stir for 30 min after which time the reaction mixture was concentrated at ambient temperature. The resulting syrup was concentrated twice with toluene to give the title compound as a white foam. 1H NMR (500 MHz, D2O) δ 6.13 (s, 1H), 5.73 (s, 1H), 4.23 (t, J=4.8 Hz, 2H), 3.44 (t, J=4.8 Hz, 2H), 3.18 (t, J=7.0 Hz, 2H), 3.11 (t, J=6.7 Hz, 2H), 1.92 (s, 3H), 1.65-1.49 (m, 4H).
